The Pleasure Garden (1925)
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock
Quick Hit
A first swing full of velvet shadows and raw instinct.
Full Take
Hitchcock's debut is still feeling for the blade, but you can already see the hand tightening around it. The backstage melodrama moves with a strange, dreamy confidence, and even when the film wobbles, the visual hunger is there. More fascinating than flawless, but the signal is unmistakable.

I honestly think this is elite. It might not be perfect, but it does so many things right that it doesn’t matter.
