Hour of the Wolf (1968)
Directed by Ingmar Bergman
Quick Hit
Hour of the Wolf has feeling in the dark corners, which keeps it dangerously high. It hurts in exactly the right places.
Full Take
This one lives in atmosphere first and story second, which can be a blessing or a problem. If the characters don’t pull you in, the style can only carry so much weight. Once the mood is set, everything comes down to whether the film can cash in its own setup. When the emotional line goes flat, the whole spell weakens. That keeps it from greatness, but not from mattering.
